The beginning of climate refugees

by Youth Reporter Seo-Jin Lee

Environmental Problems ,one of the biggest problems of the 21st century, are causing continuous climate change and global warming. People who have no place to live are wandering around the world as climate refugees due to climate changes.. The last two manned islands in Schnorbon, southwest Bangladesh, are no longer crowded with residents. More than 34,000 residents of the island suffered great damage as the cyclone hit the island four times in two years. "The story of immigration and refugees caused by climate change has now become a common story." In a 2018 report, the World Bank warned that if climate-related measures are not taken worldwide, climate immigrants will reach tens of millions within 2050 in three developing countries: sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia and Latin America. Energy from the sun is released back into space after reaching Earth. However, when the greenhouse gas in the atmosphere thickens, it blocks energy emitted into space and increases the temperature of the atmosphere, causing global warming. People who have lost their place of life due to such serious global warming are called "climate refugees."

A representative example is a country called Tuvalu, which consists of nine islands. Tuvalu is a country where nature and humans coexist without a single factory. As global warming continued and sea levels rose, flooding occurred. Two of the nine islands were submerged, and the rest of the islands began to sink. Eventually, Tuvalu declared a national crisis and chose the path of climate refugees. In the case of land, it is devastated by rising temperatures and desertified by severe drought, so it chooses the path of refugees on its own. The desolate land is dry and plants do not grow, and high temperatures are destroying the ecosystem. In this state, if the Earth's temperature rises 0.5 degrees further, the IPCC (International Council under the United Nations jointly established by the World Meteorological Organization and the United Nations Environmental Program) announced that about 100 million refugees could occur. It also predicted that the population in the food crisis would be about 35 million.

So is there any way to solve the climate refugee problem?

Countries and organizations that support climate refugees are making constant efforts, such as providing refugees with a place of life and education and environment for their own production activities. However, the most effective way to prevent climate refugees is to lower the Earth's temperature. We need to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by reducing meat intake in our daily lives, and save energy and resources through public transportation.

Climate refugees mostly occur in poor countries such as small island countries and African regions. However, the person who made them have no choice but to walk on the path of refugees is a powerhouse that uses the environment indiscriminately.

Above all, the Earth is not the only place where we live. Only when we care about each other and consider the environment can we protect a beautiful environment.
